Desert wine Malvasia, vintage 2010 made by the Monemvasia winery from Greece was the best Balkan wine for 2014!
That was a decision of the prestigious international panel of judges of the third Balkan International Wine Competition BIWC 2014! The best wine was chosen after the blind tasting and the results were announced during the Gala Diner on Saturday, June 7, 2014 by Director of the BIWC 2014 Ms. Galina Niforou. Some 400 wines were submitted for the competition from the Balkan Peninsula, Central and Eastern Europe and Black Sea region. The international panel of judges was presided for the third year by the only Master of Wine (MW) in the Balkans, Konstantinos Lazarakis MW. Other distinguished members of the panel included Caroline Gilby MW (UK), Rod Smith MW (France), Alessandro Griccioli (Italia), Trevor Long (UK), Jaime Araujo and others.
Total of 42 Gold Medals was awarded (Bulgaria 20, Greece 9, Serbia 6, Macedonia 4, Croatia 2 and Romania 1), which is a bit more than 10% of all wines that entered the competition.
The Trophy Winners per categories are as follows:
Red Wine: Melnik 55 – vintage 2012 by Logodaj, Bulgaria
White Wine: Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier – vintage 2013 by Chamlija, Turkey
Rose Wine: Kisov Roze – vintage 2013 by Vinarija Kis, Serbia
Sparkling Wine: EM Brut Rose – vintage 2009 by Edoardo Miroglio, Bulgaria
Desert Wine: Malvasija – vintage 2010 by Monemvasia, Greece
This year the Special Award was given in the memory of Kolio Karamfilov, a Bulgarian artist who was the author of Grand Trophy of the Balkans International Wine Competition, was introduced for the best wine labels.
The Grand Trophy was given for the series of labels made by Orbelus Winery, Bulgaria.
The Gold Medal for design was awarded to two wineries:
Salty Hills series of labels by Black Sea Gold winery, Bulgaria and
Chamlija series of labels by Chamlija Winery, Turkey.
The Silver Medal was awarded for the series of labels Je m’en fous by Karamitros winery, Greece.
The Bronze Medal was awarded for the series of labels Temet by Temet winery, Serbia.
