The Balkans International Wine Competition and Festival 2012 (BIWC 2012)
Press Release 1/6/2012
Date: June 10, 2012
Dear Sirs
It is our pleasure to inform you that our Competition shall take place on June 14 and June 15, 2012, while the Festival is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, June 16 and June 17, 2012 from 11:00 until 19:00 – both at Grand Hotel, Sofia, Bulgaria. Only Festival is open to public.
Almost 100 wineries from 9 countries of the Balkan region will compete with close to 400 wines for the Grand Trophy and Trophies in the following 5 categories: dry red, dry white, dry rose, sparkling and dessert wine. This wine competition do not follow OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine) standards and methods of tasting and scoring wines, instead it is closer to the Australian Wine Show model, thus allowing for a better evaluation of the competing wines. Members of our panel of judges are highly qualified and respectable wine professionals, including four members holding the most prestigious qualification in the world of wine – Master of Wine (MW):
Konstantinos Lazarakis MW
Caroline Gilby MW
Christy Canterbury MW
Paul Liversedge MW
The Grand Trophy, Trophies in all five categories and other BIWC awards will be announced at a special Awards Ceremony and Gala Diner on June 16, 2012 at 20:30 at Shades of Red Restaurant at Grand Hotel Sofia.
More than 50 wineries from the Balkan region will be a part of the Festival and this is a unique opportunity to taste such a vast number of excellent wines from this exciting Old World region. An essential part of the BIWC is the series of 10 master-classes and 8 lectures covering an enormously broad range of topics from the wine world by the experts and well-known professionals in the field. All details are available here:
We expect about three thousands visitors during the Festival and are very excited to be in position to introduce many great Balkan wineries and wines to the world and Bulgarian wine public. All wine lovers over 18 years of age are welcome to our Festival!
