Meet the Judges of BIWC 2025: Tomislav Ivanovic
In this special series, we introduce the jury members of the 14th edition of The Balkans International Wine Competition – professionals with years of experience in the global wine industry, each bringing a unique perspective and deep knowledge of the Balkan region. Today, we hear from Tomislav Ivanovic, wine writer, critic, lecturer and editor-in-chief of Vinopedia.rs, holder of the title “Best Wine Personality of the Balkans 2024”, and panel chair at this year’s BIWC.
You have been awarded “Best Wine Personality in the Balkans for the 13th BIWC 2024”. What does this award bring you?
I still remember quite vividly the moment when my name was called to the stage to receive the Best Wine Personality in the Balkans 2024 award during the BIWC Gala Dinner last year. After more than a decade of working in the wine world of the Balkans—traveling extensively around the region to get to know local wines, producers, and indigenous grape varieties—this award came as recognition of all my efforts and hard work to promote the Balkans as an exquisite wine region. I feel great satisfaction, because the award is proof that my work so far has been noticed and appreciated in the region. It also helped amplify my message about Balkan wines and made it easier for my voice to be heard.
You will be a panel chair for the first time. Is this an honor or a big responsibility?
I perceive it as a big responsibility. Until now, I enjoyed the role of senior judge—supporting panel chairs and providing insight into local distinctive features and context when it comes to wines from the Balkans. However, the panel chair role brings added responsibility: to ensure that the panel of judges works smoothly as a team, with the common task of selecting the best among the wines from our region. BIWC jury members are experienced tasters and well-acquainted with Balkan wines, so I have no doubt we will have an exciting tasting session ahead.
Why do you think participating in the competition is important for winemakers? What benefits can it bring them?
I strongly value BIWC and believe it is a regional competition with an excellent judging panel. The organizers pay special attention to selecting experienced tasters with proven track records and broad knowledge of the Balkan region. This gives winemakers the opportunity to present their wines in front of top international judges and tasters.
A medal or the title of “Best in the Balkans” is not only a strong promotional tool for the winery but also for the entire wine region and country. BIWC has a large visibility—not only in the Balkans but also internationally—so it serves as a great way to make one’s wines visible to the global wine community. After all, every winemaker would love for their wine to earn the trophy “The Best of Balkans”.
